new works

three new works which were created fo the 'Off the Wall' Cf37art.net group exhibition at the Muni art Centre, Pontypridd South Wales
These new works are a revisit to older ink drawings of mine.
These ink drawings…I don’t quite know where they came from…but for a few months I was compelled to draw them…I see them as little pets, that manifested themselves from somewhere within my being…a psychological reality rather than a real one ,but never the less just as real to me, as once they are created they kind of ‘ live’ ! The little dog ink drawing ( see older posts) became inspiration for a sculptural object that I made.. This object has become quite a pet of mine.. He sits near me at home and has become quite a part of the family.. . And a friend I couldn’t part with! As my work has become more 3 Dimensional now rather than 2 Dimensional, these little pets I imagine will start to manifest themselves more and more in my artwork. I’ve lost so many loved pets and I feel these little beings come to my imagination in a playful way after these pets have been lost to me. Little half domesticated wild things that struggle to be human while still unable to escape their own little animal world.

The Miner

This work has recently been bought by the University of Glamorgan for their permanent collection.
Im quite sad to see it go in a way, the Miner had become part of my family!
Half of this work was salvaged from a skip ouside my local pub, it was the pub that my grandfather regularly had a pint or two in ( I never met my Grandfather as as he died before I was born, in fact he died when my father was just a teenager and so my father took on the role, rather relunctantly! as breadwinner for his family. My dad went to grammer school which was quite an achievement considering his background, but was forced to leave education due to his Fathers early death,)
The found wood I have used for this artwork therefore is a kind of reaching out to a limb from my family tree...toward reaching my grandfather. The same bit of bar is also where my own father had his first pint. In a way it was my Father also revisiting his past in that he frequented the place is father once visited. My concern with all this is the personal history that an inaminate object can possess. there must be some dna of my grandfather in that artwork of mine...well i was glad to sell it obviously for the money, but i lost my connection with my grandfather too...i hope this makes sense...?

Dining Chair- 2005

oh well...so this blog isnt in any chronological order... I decided that I want this blog to be a place I can let things be a bit freer...no strict order, or being marked on what I do here!...this is an idea I had in my journal (2005) that hasnt yet been worked to 3D. its a quick sketch and not a polished drawing I would exhibit..its a note for me...a future possibility...What is it with chairs? they keep coming my way!

Daddy Armchair - 2005

Hybrid Object.

Upholstered Sculpture.
‘People who are not present but leave an imprint on our thoughts.’

Hydrophobia - 2005

This work is a comment on the domestication of the human. I use the everyday object as a metaphor for our domesticated selves. This works spider-like form represents the more primitive beginnings of the human. The domestic sink i see as also representing the element of water, where all life originated according to the theories of evolution. This sink sculpture was exhibited with other domestic hybrid objects in a house-like setting and played the part of one of the members of a 'family'. The sink i see as playing the teenager of that family, between stages of metamorphosis, neither an adult or a child and self-conscious of its changing body.
